Many times, Christians use the terms praise and worship interchangeable. However, they are quite different. Worship goes beyond our praises to God. To explain, when we praise God, we boldly express a feeling of gratitude for all God has done for us. However, when we worship God, our focus is shifted from what God has done to Who God is. In other words, our worship expresses reverence and awe toward God because of His character and attributes. God is infinite, immutable, self-sufficient, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, wise, faithful, good, just, merciful, gracious, loving, glorious and holy. Therefore, all of these attributes make God worthy of our worship.
In God’s spiritual tabernacle, we are told to enter His gates with “thanksgiving” and the outer courts “with praise,” (Psalm 100:4). And finally, we enter the holy of holies with our “worship.”
Why should we worship God?
The primary reason we worship God is because He commands us to and forbids the worship of others (Exodus 20:3-5). Moreover, Jesus repeated this commandment to Satan after His final temptation in the wilderness: “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve,” (Matthew 4:8–11).
In addition, God expects worship from His people because He is the Creator of all things (Genesis 1). Furthermore, God is the sustainer of all life: “He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” (Colossians 1:17, NLT). Finally, God demands worship because He and He alone is worthy of it (Revelation 4:11).
How does worship go beyond our praises to God?
Worship can take on the form of external activities such as, kneeling, bowing, raising the hands, music, etc. However, true worship always begins from within. Jesus told the Samaritan woman, at the well, that true worshipers will one day worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). God is a spiritual being. Therefore, to worship Him in spirit, we must go beyond the physical. True worship is an attitude of the heart—our affections are totally set on the Lord. However, this only happens when our hearts are made sensitive to God by His Holy Spirit living within our human spirits.
Benefits of Worshipping God
Worship brings us into the presence of God. It also releases the hand of God into our circumstances. What is more, worship brings instruction, revelation and angels into the atmosphere as “ministering spirits” (Hebrews 1:14) to bring God’s healing and deliverance to His people.
