Thanksgiving in Prayer

Women prayingWhen we pray to see a supernatural move of God, we must pray with a humble and thankful attitude. Thanksgiving in prayer involves recognizing what God has done for you. Psalm 100:4-5 KJV, tells us to “enter His gates with thanksgiving.”  The gates give us access to heaven’s courts, and the courts give us access to God’s throne room. Additionally, the Bible says, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you,” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Paul isn’t telling believers in Christ that they must be thankful for the problems they are experiencing; instead, he is challenging them to be thankful in spite of their difficulties.

Thanksgiving in prayer opens the door to God’s miracle working power

The story of Jesus feeding over 5,000 men, women and children is an example of  how giving thanks to God can open doors for His power to manifest in our behalf. For example, Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish and gave thanks to God for what He had in His hand. Then, He distributed the food to more than 5,000 men, women and children who had come to hear Him teach. Everyone ate until they were full. When they finished eating, the disciples filled twelve baskets with the remaining fragments of food (Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15).

Jesus taught several lessons in the feeding of the multitude. First, it is important to acknowledge God as the provider of everything we have and need. Secondly, Jesus teaches that thanksgiving is the primary ingredient in receiving blessings from God. Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God,” (Philippians 4:6). God generously provides us with even more when we show an appreciation for what He has already provided.

Thanksgiving deepens our faith in God

Our faith in God is built up when we constantly reflect on His goodness and faithfulness to us. Making a habit of this places our thoughts on God, rather than on our problems. A thankful attitude will help to erase any fears and worries we may have as we pray. What is more, thankfulness to God will help us to develop confidence and hope in what God can and will do (see Psalm 121:1-8).
